Unfortunately, it’s way too easy to run ads on YouTube that are too broad and spend your entire budget too quickly, before getting the results you need.

VidTarget is a tool that helps you find the best specific YouTube videos that are a match for your ads, then create lists of these videos to import into your YouTube ad campaigns.
BEFORE YOU BEGIN, KNOW THIS:
YouTube allows you to target groups of specific videos that you decide are relevant to your business.
This means you can decide to run your ads only on videos that already talk about topics that are similar to the product or service you sell, so it’s a highly relevant viewership.
You can target these videos by doing In-stream ads, which are YouTube pre-rolls. This means you can run your video ad to show up right before the relevant videos from another channel.
You can also run Discovery ads on these videos, meaning they run in the Suggested Video area.
Most advertisers don’t take advantage of this highly-targeted option, because:
a. Without a tool, it’s hard to find enough relevant videos to target at scale when you do it manually.
b. There are new videos in a given topic being added all the time.
c. Some videos allow ads, and some don’t. But it’s generally not a fixed status. Owners can switch ads on or off at any given time (it’s called monetization), and other copyright owners can “claim” the content of those videos and have them taken down or change them to allow ads or stop allowing ads.

In the Dashboard, click on “Search for Targets.”
Click on “Video Placements.”
Enter a word or phrase you think people would be searching on and enter it into search.
Click the search icon.
The results show:
a. Most popular keyword phrases related to your topic.
b. The general search volume. This number is taken from Google search, and the numbers will be smaller on YouTube than Google, but the topics are likely popular in roughly the same ratio on both Google and YouTube.
c. A button that creates a list for you of the most popular videos in that group.
d. You can click on the headers to sort alphabetically or by most popular.
Find the list you like and click on the “+ Create List” button – Under “Extract Videos From Keyword – Save To Target List:” Click Save.
Or, if you like more than one phrase, click the checkbox or tickbox by the phrases you like and click “Bulk Create Groups.”
a. Under “Importing Video Placements To Groups” Click Proceed.
b. You’ll see a dialog box that says “Successfully Added Videos”. If you add a few groups together, it will take a while to process.
To view the list, click on “Go To List” or Click “Placement Lists” in the navigation.
You can make one big list, but sometimes it’s better to break out your results into smaller lists and test them against one another to see which one works best.
